LONDON CALLING by Gerard Sexton Late September 2013
#MEET-UPS
Phyllis Clarke CREW
13 years ago — Moderator
THIS IS A COPY/PASTE from the post under Logo Photo...from Gerry Sexton which may not be seen easily as an invitation..... If interested please write your interests here to Gerard.
Gerard says the following:

I am certain that in the not too distant future (when you get to my age everything you look at seems distant but the future is never distant) there will be another Londons calling I reckon Sept nearer the end off will be ideal.

So those so over joyed by this news should start contemplating this event and begin to offer dates when they can or cannot be available during the last two weekends of Sept. And I know for you younger snappers its a long way off and you may get better offers in the meantime but hey take a risk and join in the fun Andre is our in-house entertainer and raconteur (he does a wonderful impression of a dead fly sliding down a glass window pain) Chris supplies all those reformed smokers with Cafe Cremes to tempt them back onto the evil weed and if Mal is available considering his tight schedule he is the spiritual leader. Oh yes of course the ineffable Colmar will always be the cultural attache!

Think about it but not for too long! Be there or be square!

Goodness, the chance to make two 1x meet-ups in one year!!! :) Ok so the last one was sort of a mini-meetup, slightly impromptu. But there is a good chance I will escape this continent at the end of the summer (our winter) in which case I look forward to a repeat performance :)

Hello folks I am still here just been otherwise absorbed. I will let this run a bit longer and then confirm the weekend but it looks like the last weekend in Sept is favourite though until I confirm it it still up for grabs.

I understand that the organisational skills employed in Amsterdam have cet a precedent but organisation is not my strong point I may be looking to others to help on that side! Chris Andre you may have some ideas and advice (keep it clean).

So watch this space I will leave this to run until mid June and then firm up the date.

Have fun in the meantime!

Ok guys I have checked interest and it appears to me that the last weekend of Sept (apologies Victoria) is the most favoured date. So London Calling for 2013 is officially 28th Sept.

So far those able to make it with or without a preference for which weekend are;

Lars Grerpstad (if he can stop playing sailors)
Chris Dixon
Andre Du Plessis
Klaus-Peter Kubik
Ricky Stiegers
Linda Wride
Jan Gravekamp
Charlie Packard
Eliza Deacon(?)
Jef Van den Houte

Can you all make this date indelible in your calendars.

I encourage others to come the day is very relaxed you get to meet some great people exchange ideas opinions and techniques face to face. We start at Gordons Wine bar for breakfast not obligatory but really very civilised and the day unfolds from there.

Anyway lets hope others are added to the list Mal Smart and Petra Oldeman said they were considering joining in lets hope so.

Oh dear yes the French baby sitter the one that Andre had lined up to relieve me? For all we know Chris may have a little thing going with her now and he is talking in code probably trying to disguise the fact since he only refers to her as the date! Are you back on blighty?

Andre bring what you want cameras are not essential but if you want to take some snaps a pin hole may be a bit cumbersome! We will be happy to see you with or without the camera!

Great the dates in the diary for you Linda a new name a new face always welcome.

Charlie the gap will be the same in the morning as it is in the evening....I recommend plenty of liquid just enough to swell the midriff so that if you are seeing double when you travel back that little extra will help in the unlikely event that you slip or loose your footing...The Fuji won't aid you in this case so if you don't imbibe the odd one or two bring a bulky DSLR and wear it on a belt!

Good morning all. Yesterday Andre and myself had a get together to discuss plans for the London calling at the end of the month. Past events have been fairly relaxed affairs nothing structured and I think it has worked. However since some of you haven't been before and are coming some distance it would be good to hear from you to understand if you have any expectations for the day. Traditionally we have started with coffees and croissants or a full English breakfast at Gordons and then just taken an easy stroll around Trafalgar Square up into Covent Garden and then down on to the South Bank via Waterloo bridge.

There are few what I would call opportunities for Architectural shots on this route it really is a street walk no more. Generally the route takes in a fairly heavily populated areas so there will plenty of chance for street shoots. We do not go anywhere near the city where there are more modern building close up where there is more chance to get some architectural shots.

The downside of this if there is one is that the two areas are quite a distance apart so since we only have one day I recommend that we stick together rather than split the group. However if there is a big draw to the buildings Andre and I can split the group and bring you together later when have out evening meal.

So its your call if you are happy to stay in the West End or would rather go to the City then please let me know and I will try an accommodate this. It will not change the meeting arrangements its best all meet at Gordons but if the group does split up we need only take the tube to take those of you who would prefer to go to the city. Be aware though that at the week end generally speaking the City is devoid of humans certainly en masse. The odd curious looking photographers is probably all you will see.

Let me know. As for a roll call these are those people so far confirming their attendance;

Hello all!! I am a new entry here ...just browsing around as I would like to meet people who enjoy photography...I am in London too and London meet-up seems appealing - however I have got already a commitment on the 28th. I thought I'll drop a line to tell you about the open house week end 21-22nd of september - it can be a great occasion for architectural shots! Battersea Power station is one of the buildings I would like to visit and then I still need to make an itinerary...some of the most popular buildings might require a booking or queueing. If somebody fancy joining or meet up after please let me know! Hopefully I will be able to join you at the next meet up! Cheers

Hi Valentina
I know .... and just today a nurse that I was working with told me that she will be visiting (yeah .. you guessed it) Battersea Power Station. (for those that don't know about this building - Google the album cover of Pink Floyd's 'Animals' album.
However,. as luck has it - I am at a conference that weekend, so no luck.
However, if you wish to have a social meet-up with some of us (more chat than actually taking piccies), then feel free to wander over to Gordon's on Saturday and say Hi. Bring your camera along for good measure.

I planned to make it a nice London weekend (Friday-Sunday).
But I have now to return home Sunday late afternoon...and have no timely return flight.

I usually travel from Antwerp airport to London City Airport (much more convenient for me than the Eurostar). And the first return flight on Sunday is at 7.10 PM only.

For those dear folks that are coming to join up on Saturday for London Calling IV - here are the contact details:

Gerry: +44 7986 877490
Andre: +44 7723 604235

Gordon's Wine Bar (meeting up around 10:30-11:00am): http://www.gordonswinebar.com/hist01.php

Archdukes Restaurant (dinner - provisionally booked for 7:30pm):
http://www.toptable.co.uk/the-archduke (Archduke's own website ceased since they have been bought over, and the new link is useless)

Closer to the date Gerry will drop some titbits about Saturday.

On Friday evening I shall be meeting up with Lars G and Jan G. They are traveling into London from afar, and we plan to share some beers and have a good chat.

Should anyone be in town and wish to join in on Friday evening, please drop a note here in this thread or send me a text. As Lars and Jan will both be staying close to Trafalgar Square, I guess that it only makes sense to meet up somewhere close to there.
Looking very much forward to see you all this weekend.

And .... do bring your camera.

The only website that I trust for weather is www.yr.no, as unfortunately they predict rain between 1 and 7 pm. Which is exactly the time that we want to stroll around.
However, the temperature will be 20C, so I guess it will feel like liquid sunshine. Roll on Saturday.

And ........ do bring the brollies:(

If you have a new long photo of the group...you can send that to me..OR ANYONE reading this who takes the picture..crop to 1200 x 250...and I will change the photo.....

Hello everyone. Sorry to hear the no shows though I understand and appreciate the difficulties. Please excuse my apparent silence over the past few days my house move is on a trajectory that leaves me little room for manoeuvre. But I am getting there. I will make every effort to join Lars Jan and Andre on Friday at some point though I have to be in Oxford during the afternoon so its more likely to be in the evening.

For those traveling and arriving on Saturday we normally meet at Gordons at 10:30-11:00 it would be appreciated if anyone unable to be there at that time contacted me to give me an idea when they might arrive and I can arrange for contingencies.

Andre has already promoted the idea you bring wet weather clothing as some rain is predicted during the day.

An evening meal has been booked not certain the accommodate vegetarians but I cannot imagine they don't.

As for our route we can talk about this on the morning but generally speaking the tried and tested stroll around some main sights that takes in Trafalgar Square Covent Garden Waterloo bridge and the South Bank is usually going to throw up some interesting encounters.

Well Chris. You will have to play catch-up.
A few of us had (most certainly) the weirdest experience tonight.
Imagine London- Foodie Capital (barring the French opinion) of Europe. Yet we find ourselves in an Italian restaurant where the waitress (MBA student) tells us that the management does not serve Parmesan cheese. Only cheddar, for that does the job. Where the white wine gets served with the top still on. Where they don't serve sweets or ice cream for dear Lans (the sweet 8yr old son of Lars G) - because they only serve food:)
And as Andrew T googled - where most of the patrons and waiters have gone online and left horrific comments on 'The Italian restaurant' off Leicester Square.
However - none of this managed to dampen the spirit and joy. We had oodles of fun. Then the man called jan from the Netherlands had us trekking over to the Square Mile where we had an after midnight dose of coffee cognac x 3.
Rather depleted now ...
Looking forward to see you all in the morning. The clouds looked heavy tonight, so we might be in for some low light and low life tomorrow, but who cares.
See you at 10:30.
