I noticed an interest on Nikon' s 1 V1. This small sensor handy camera happens to be very popular so I transfer a few comments from other topics for this one to be more complete.

I doubt about buying a new camera to upgrade or back-up the D300... the D7100 or small compact camera.
I read a lot of good critics of the Sony NEX series , but it's a complete new concepts compared to Nikon!

Should I go for the Nikon V1... and is this camera good in low light?

Best, ben

Just discovered:

in this preview, it seems the Nikon 1 V1 has more problems in low light, compared to the NEX 6 & 7...probably due the small sensor.

For your purpose i suggest the Nikon V1. My wife and i using it. We have decided for this camera as we wanted the same superb image quality like our bigger models which are heavy and bulgy. We have only two lens, the 10-30 and the 30-110. We aware of the heavy crop factor which is an issue but we also learned about the many advantages of this little small high speed camera. Also the price is interesting as a kid with the 10-30 you can get this new for around 400 Euro. The AF system will let you stun the same as the EXPEED 3 image processor who works with 600 mpix / sec which makes it possible to click almost 60 frames a second with fixed AF. Without fixed AF 10 frames:-)
Now the best, if you are using already Nikon, with a small adapter all other of your Nikon lens will work on the small V1. When i am using my 80-200 f2,8 on it......oh dear 540 mm focal lenght without loosing an aperture:-)

....The Nikon 1 V1 ( N1 V1) has a different feel with its 10mm lens that is equivalent to a 28mm for a full frame camera. In normal light the N1 V1 has no weakness. In low light You really have to be patient and hit the moment before the subject allows his body to be one with his, or her moment into the law of kinetic energy. I only submitted one image of a girl lifting a bucket of water in india. It's a good example for twilight shooting or low light like conditions.

If any one asks why not the nikon 1 v2. The answer is simple. Nikon just missed the boat by building a bigger camera that requires you to work with the side grip on the camera which causes it to loose it's stealth factor for camera handling.
Robert mentions the 60 frames a second. Its a cool concept. the Ni V1 also offers 30 frames and 10 frames. The painful thing is that the camera locks into an auto mode which cranks your iso to 3200. Sorry Nikon can't punch it's way out of paper bag made in China with on glue on the seams at that high iso. Beside 1x is not a big fame on camera noise from an extreme high iso level. It's best to work the camera in manual at a lower iso and pray you nail the shot. However if you rely on the remark ability of the camera's electronic shooting mechanics you could be looking at a few hundred images of the same subject with very minute differences out side of the fact the image is out of focus. With that said we can all imagine going cross eyed looking for the one image to submit jam-packed with noise.

personally, i love my Nikon V1! It's a great little gem, strong build quality,
and the quality up to ISO 800 is alright, i shoot only raw with it.

i just bought it some time ago for a "always with me" digicam,
and the strongest buying point was the 1.44M EVF, and also the
alu-magnesium body (sadly, the backside is plastic, though)

While the IQ is quite good for such a small 1 inch sensor with 10 MP,
it can't compete with my Samsung NX1000 ILC cam, which got a
20 MP APS-C sensor inside it, but otherwise no EVF, and a plastic
shell - but...the Kitlens 20-50mm NX is way sharp, you get the
best results at F5.6, and at 50mm at F8 aperture.

i've found the 20-50mm NX Samsung Lens is better than the 10-30mm VR
on the Nikon 1VR, but the Samsung Lens doesn't have VR inside the Kitlens.

IQ-wise, the Samsung wins, but from the EVF & built side, the Nikon V1 wins.

Tough decision - i have both. :-)))

Just a small note to be added about the NX1000 vs 1 V1:

Plus for the Samsung NX1000 - The 20-50mm NX Kitlens is also
way less problematic to flare & ghosts than the Nikon 10-30mm VR Kitlens.

Backside of the NX1000 Body - it's got Contrast AF only, so it's focusing not
that lightning fast as the Nikon V1 with CAF & PDAF (Phase Detection AF).

I wouldn't go higher than ISO 800 with both ILC's mentioned here,
but of course you can use ISO 1600 & even 3200 with the NX1000 in RAW
Mode & some Finetuning with Noise Reduction in LR, PhotoNinja or LightZone,
for Example.
